What makes these brownies a healthier option?
These brownies are free of refined sugar, gluten, and dairy. We use almond milk and heart healthy olive oil to moisten them, and they are sweetened with maple syrup!
We also incorporate almond butter in this recipe for structure and correct density.
And of course, there are ways to make these even healthier. More on that below.
I really wanted to create a brownie recipe that doesn’t only have one healthy ingredient. I was trying to make something that could be considered overall decently healthy for a dessert.
Oat Flour Brownies Ingredients
Wet Ingredients
Eggs: This recipe calls for two eggs. If you want to make this recipe completely plant based, you can use flax eggs. Flax eggs are simple made by combining one tablespoon of ground flaxseed with three tablespoons of water and letting that sit. These specific measurements would create the equivalent of one egg.
It will gelatinize and become the perfect egg substitute. This option will greatly increase the fiber content of the brownies too.
Almond Butter: This ingredient really helps both the structure and moisture of the brownies. You can use any nut butter you like in place of almond butter.
Maple Syrup: This is a natural sweetener. Its minimal processing makes for a more nutrient dense ingredient.
Olive Oil: Many people are scared of using olive oil in baking. In this recipe, we are only using four tablespoons of it. The rich, cocoa flavor will totally overpower any olive oil taste that one may worry about.
Vanilla: Despite this being a chocolate recipe, vanilla is always an essential. It adds a depth of flavor that you would certainly miss if you were to omit the vanilla.
Almond milk: This plant based milk helps the moisture and makes the batter a perfect consistency.
Dry Ingredients
Oat flour: This flour is a really good gluten free ingredient, but you have to be careful. You must make sure that your oat flour is either certified gluten free, or that you make it yourself using your own certified gluten free oats.
Oats that are not labeled gluten free have almost always come into major contact with wheat during processing. Certified gluten free oats are grown and processed with gluten contamination prevention in mind.
Cocoa Powder: This recipe was made using raw cacao powder. This tends to be richer and a bit more bitter than regular cocoa powder so keep that in mind while making these.
Baking Soda: Since the cacao powder is naturally acidic, baking soda is the choice rising agent here.
Chocolate Chips: Depending on what kind you use, the chocolate chips could be the dairy in this recipe. I used chocolate chips from the brand Enjoy Life. These are popular for being free of 14 allergens, including dairy and gluten.
Step by Step Oat flour Brownies
- The first thing to do when you have multiple dry ingredients is to whisk them together. If they are all mixed evenly, each ingredient will naturally be thoroughly incorporated into the batter.
- Combine all wet ingredients except for almond milk. We are going to add this later. Eggs, maple syrup, olive oil, vanilla, and almond butter.
Whisk these ingredients together very well. You may see bubbles form from the eggs whipping. You do not need to actually whip the eggs, just mix until everything seems combined really well.
The almond butter can make the wet ingredients a bit difficult to combine, but eventually you will get an even mixture.
3. Now is time to add all of the dry ingredients, except for the chocolate chips. Just mix all of this until it seems moderately combined.
As you are mixing this, slowly pour the almond milk in. You will see the batter become thinner and easier to mix.
4. When everything is fully combined, fold in the chocolate chips.
5. Pour batter into pan and bake for 40-45 minutes. You should check them after 30 minutes since every oven is different.
6. Let the brownies rest in the pan for 10-15 minutes!
7. You can either eat them as they are or make this simple almond butter drizzle. All you do is combine almond flour with maple syrup!
